LOUISVILLE, KY — After centuries of heated debate among newcomers, locals, and GPS voices, Kentucky officials have finally confirmed that the correct pronunciation of “Louisville” is “Luhvull.” Or possibly “Looavuhl.” Or maybe just a humid exhale that sounds like syllables drowning in bourbon.
“It’s not hard,” said resident Cathy Jo Wilburn, midway through telling off a visiting reporter. “You just gotta let your jaw go slack, give up on consonants, and mumble like you’re apologizing to a biscuit.”
Tourists continue to struggle, with one Ohio man reportedly hospitalized after attempting to pronounce every letter in the word. “He got to the second ‘i’ and just seized up,” said EMS responders. “We had to give him fluids and a copy of Southern Living.”
City leaders say they’ll soon launch a pronunciation awareness campaign called “Lose Yourself in Luhvull”, featuring interactive training videos, guided mumbling workshops, and a hotline staffed by grandma-level experts in front-porch elocution.
Lexington residents have already responded with predictable smugness. “It’s funny,” said UK fan Derek from Nicholasville. “Louisville folks can’t agree on how to say their city, but they’ll fight to the death over tattoo placement fees from their Final Four year that got vacated.” He then added, “Go Cats,” unprompted.
Visit Louisville officials say that no matter how you say it, you’re welcome — as long as you don’t call it Lewis-ville, which is grounds for immediate banishment to Indiana.
